Traveling Abroad

Studying abroad or traveling for business? In the interest of protecting our members from international debit card fraud, GUASFCU prevents transactions initiated in most countries outside of the United States from being processed unless notified that a member will be abroad and needs to make purchases overseas. Consequently, we ask that members planning to spend time abroad notify us so that we can lift those protections and ensure that their debit cards are fully functional in any country they will be traveling to. In order to inform GUASFCU of your travel plans, please fill out the International Card Usage Form, located here. Alternatively, you may call into the branch at (202) 687-8616 or email us at help@guasfcu.com, and provide the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Account Number
  • Last 4 Digits of Your Social Security Number
  • Which Countries You Plan to Travel to While Abroad
  • How Long (Please Provide Date Ranges) You Plan to Spend in Each Country

GUASFCU's current policy allows for exceptions that permit members to spend money overseas to be applied for a period of 90 days. This time limit is in place to further ensure your safety from international card fraud by guaranteeing that your card does not remain unprotected for an extended period. Near the expiration date of any exceptions on your account, GUASFCU will send you an email asking you to confirm several of your most recent transactions and if you plan to continue using your card overseas.

If at any time you realize you plan to travel to a country you had not initially expected to, please notify GUASFCU so that we can make sure you are able to utilize your debit card there. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us.
